About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

5 out of 5 stars Great workout for the price!   December 29, 2008
So, my husband and I went looking for an elliptical and found this model at a local sporting goods store. I wanted to try it out for myself. It was quiet and steady and comfortable on my legs. I was pleasantly surprised. It was on sale. However, they were out of them since this is last years model. We searched the other stores. I would have purchased from Amazon but we read about the shipping problems with Amazon and this product. We found the last one at another local store.

My husband put it together in about 3 hours. It has a tiny clicking sound while pedaling but I think I know where to adjust to get rid of it. Other than that it is very quiet. Much more than a treadmill.

I had my regular 25-30 (with cool down) work out on it. Not bad at all for the price. We paid around $700 because of the sale. And I made sure we purchased the store's 3 year protection plan. You never know. I hope Schwinn continues to improve on this model but not too much. For example, the cup placement is a little off. Otherwise, the price will soar.

4 out of 5 stars Very accurate descriptions in these reviews.   December 26, 2008
Well I also spent about two months researching ellipticals before I bought this. I previously owned a ProForm that lasted eight years of regular use before the frame broke. Since I use it regularly, I wanted a more expensive unit than the $399 ProForm that I had. I narrowed it down to the Schwinn 431 for 2 main reasons: Most comfortable for me and a good price in comparison to the others. I paid $699.
As far as the other reviews I read, they are accurate.
It took 2.5 hours to assemble, but was not difficult at all.
It squeaked like hell after about three days of use, so I followed the advice here and loosened up the screws in two key areas, and it stopped squeaking! It is very quiet now. Also very stable and not tippy at all. I am six feet tall and weigh 200 lbs, so test it yourself if you are larger than that.
There was damage in shipment, a piece of plastic was cracked off of the flywheel cover, but I just superglued it back in place.
The programs are good, the resistance is excellent. This is a MUCH harder machine to use than my old one. This elliptical does an amazing job of pushing me to my limits. I like the fan, and I like the iPod holder. The water bottle holder is too low, but not bad.
I like the 15 year frame warranty, especially considering my old one broke after 8 years.
Whatever you do, before you spend money, TRY THEM ALL OUT YOURSELF. Not just for 3 minutes in the store, but try it for AT LEAST twenty minutes. Otherwise, you may be making a big mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer   December 24, 2008
I purchased my 431 on 12-22-2008 from Dicks Sporting Goods in Atlanta for $699. I personally tested ellipticals for 3 weeks prior to making a purchase at Sports Authority, Sears and Dicks Sporting Goods. And, I have read numerous customer reviews.

The 431 has the functionality and quality of a high end elliptical. I tested the Sole ellipticals at Dicks Sporting goods. The Sole had a lot more bells and whistles but the ride was similiar if not the same.

The 431 is very easy to assemble. I assembled mine in 2 hours.

If you are considering purchasing a Schwinn Elliptical visit the Schwinn web site to become familiar with the models. Sports Authority is selling a 420 model that is not listed on Schwinn website. The 420 must have been made exclusively for Sports Authority or other retailers.

5 out of 5 stars Great & still going strong!   December 22, 2008
My wife and I bought this model in summer and it has been working well since. The motion is very smooth & it is very quiet. When 2adults use a machine on a daily basis, it's natural for to have a minor squeaks now and then, but all it needed was re-tightening where most of the stress is applied and problem was solved.

4 out of 5 stars Solid machine provides nice workout   December 8, 2008

First a disclaimer: I am new to home fitness equipment. After years of inactivity, I resumed bicycling this summer and lost 20 pounds. Now I want to keep the weight off and be in decent shape in the spring. I decided not to buy a bike "trainer" because of space limitations and my need to share a machine with other family members. So I bought a Schwinn 431, sight unseen, based on reviews and my low threshold for satisfaction.

So far so good. This is a solidly built, quiet machine with sufficient programs and levels for all members of my family to meet our respective goals. I highly recommend it.

I had a problem with set-up that was handled expertly by Nautilus (the manufacturer). One of the parts (lower left extension) came slightly bent. I was able to force the two parts together before I called support for assistance. After a bit of trouble getting through, I talked to a very knowledgeable technician who insisted that I replace the part rather to use it as shipped. The new part was sent that day and it arrived two days ahead of schedule. The replacement part fit like a dream and I was able to complete the set-up procedure in less than ten minutes. (Entire process does take several hours though).

It is easy to give a high rating when everything works out of the box. In the case of Nautilus, I believe that my experience with their support staff also earns them high ratings. However, the part did ship bent and, based on the excellent condition of the packing materials, I believe that the part was damaged during manufacturing or packaging - not shipping.

The trainer is not as solid as a professional model. I've used elliptical trainers in the past and this one is clearly less well made. It is also much less expensive, so I believe that the value is quite good with this trainer. I expect it to last a long time. However, I can feel it sway front to back, especially with reverse stride while holding the moving handles. I've taken to using the stationary handles when going in reverse, just to make me feel more secure.

Overall, I am quite pleased with this purchase and have given it 4 stars - discounting one star for the bent part and the swaying.
